What's Molded on the Back of Your Cap — Part Numbers, Clips and Marks
Flip a factory center cap over and the factory talks to you. The back of an OEM cap carries the information that the face hides: what it is, how it holds on, and whether it's the cap your wheel actually takes.
The part number
The headline mark: a molded part number, in the brand's family format — Honda/Acura's 44732-…, Hyundai/Kia's 52960-…, Toyota/Lexus's 42603-…, Jeep's 1LB77…, and so on. Suffixes matter: the prefix names the part type, the suffix names the application. Search the full number, exactly as molded, and you have the strongest identification in this entire hobby — stronger than any chart, including ours. Our part-number guide walks the families brand by brand.
The clip layout
Count the clips and look at their shape: how many, how they're spaced, whether a spring/wire ring sits behind them. The replacement must match the layout, not just the diameter — clip count and style are part of the fitment. Worn, cracked or missing clips on the old cap also explain mysteries: a cap with one broken clip is a cap halfway to the highway shoulder.
The depth, readable at a glance
The distance from the cap's base to the clip tips — clip depth — is visible right there on the back. Compare a candidate cap's back to your old cap's back side by side and depth mismatches show themselves before money moves. No photo of a cap's back in a listing? That's a listing to skip; sellers who know caps photograph the back.
