Clip Depth Explained — the Third Measurement Nobody Takes

Every cap fitment has three numbers: the face diameter (OD), the clip diameter (ID) — and clip depth, how far the retention clips extend behind the cap's face. Depth is the measurement nobody takes and the reason behind a whole class of "right size, won't fit" returns.

How to measure it

Stand the cap face-down on a flat surface. Measure from the surface the cap's back rim rests on — the base of the cap — to the tips of the clips. That distance is the clip depth, and it must match the depth of the recess in your wheel. Fifteen seconds with the caliper you already have out for the other two numbers.

Wrong depth, two ways

Depth is also why two caps with identical OD and ID are not automatically interchangeable: a shallow-depth and deep-depth variant can share both diameters. When a listing publishes depth, use it; when it doesn't, the part number on your old cap is the depth guarantee — same number, same depth.

Verify before you order: all three measurements are in the How to Measure walkthrough, and the Cap Finder asks for depth in its measure-and-match mode.
