Subaru owners get one of the tidier published specs in Japanese fitment: the brand's caps measure 60 mm across the face with a 55 mm clip diameter, documented under OEM part numbers 28821SA030 and 28821VA000. Two numbers, close together, both checkable in under a minute. Here's how to use them properly.

Face says 60, clips say 55

The five-millimetre step between the face diameter and the clip diameter is the cap's shoulders doing their job — the face covers the opening, the narrower clip ring snaps into it. When you shop, both numbers matter, but they matter in order: the clip ID is the fitment (it's what physically engages the wheel), and the OD is the identity check that you're looking at the right family. A listing that quotes only "60 mm Subaru cap" has told you the less important half.

The part-number habit pays here

Subaru's documented numbers follow the brand's 28821 prefix pattern, and the two published suffixes — SA030 and VA000 — reflect different applications within the same 60/55 geometry. Read the molding on the back of your cap and match the full number where you can. Where the number is unreadable, the measurement pair (60 across the face, 55 across the clip tips) identifies the family on its own.

All-weather footnote

Subarus live disproportionately in snow country — they're bought for winters, and their caps serve through them. Factory caps are mostly ABS plastic, which holds up well in the cold, but clip tips embrittle with age and salt exposure. If you're replacing one winter-killed cap, inspect the other three; clips age as a set, and a spring replacement round is cheaper than a midwinter scavenger hunt. Our salt-belt care guide covers the seasonal routine.

Verify before you order: the Cap Finder carries the Subaru entry with both part numbers; confirm the 60/55 measurements on your own cap with the How to Measure method.

Measuring a worn Subaru cap

One technique note that matters on this brand: clip tips wear. A cap that has been pried off a dozen times across fifteen winters may caliper a few tenths under its original clip diameter, because the tips themselves have been shaved by the wheel opening. Measure across several opposing clip pairs, not just one, and read the largest consistent figure — that's the closest record of the cap the factory made. If the pairs disagree wildly, the cap is telling you it's done; replace it by the part number and the 60 mm face, and let the new cap's clips re-establish the fit.
