Lost Your Center Cap With No Spare? Measure the Wheel Opening Instead
Every other guide on this site starts with "pop your cap and measure it." This one starts where you actually are: the cap is gone — highway, car wash, tire shop, unknown — there's no spare in the trunk, and the wheel is sitting there with a hole in the middle of it. Good news: the wheel kept the measurement even though it didn't keep the cap.
The principle
A snap-in cap fits because its clip diameter matches the wheel's center opening. Lose the cap and you lose the part, not the spec: the opening's diameter is the number the missing cap's clips were built to engage. Measure the opening and you've recovered the critical half of the fitment. This is straight from the measurement guides the site is built on — if the cap is lost, measure the wheel's center-bore opening directly.
The method
Clean the opening first — brake dust and corrosion shrink a reading and hide the true edge. With a caliper, measure across the inside of the opening at its widest point, then again at 90 degrees; openings can be slightly out of round, and the larger, consistent reading is your working number. Measure in millimetres. Note also how deep the opening's shoulder sits and whether there's a lip or groove the clips would have engaged — depth and retention features are the rest of the cap's identity.
What to write down before you shop
Your opening diameter, the opening's depth, your vehicle and — most importantly — which wheel: brand, diameter and style if you can identify it, because caps follow wheels. Photograph the wheel face and the opening. If the other three caps survive, pop one of those and measure it directly — a surviving sibling is better evidence than any inference, and it carries the part number the lost cap took with it.
Shopping with an opening measurement
Look for caps whose published clip ID matches your opening measurement, in the size families the Cap Finder documents for your brand — then cross-check the cap's OD against the opening's outer recess so the face will sit flush. Be suspicious of listings that publish only an OD; for a replacement-by-inference, the clip diameter is the number doing the work. The full measuring technique, including clip depth, is on our How to Measure page.
Disclosure: this site stocks nothing and sells nothing directly — we earn on referrals, not on parts. Where we mention dealers or marketplaces, any shopping link that becomes an active affiliate link may pay us a small commission at no extra cost to you. That model is exactly why our advice starts with a caliper instead of a checkout button.
