Volkswagen Center Cap Sizes — the 65 mm Cap, the 60 mm Golf, and a 56–66.5 mm Family

Volkswagen is the brand that teaches the whole lesson of this site in one lineup. Across the VW range, center cap outer diameters run 56 to 66.5 mm, with clip diameters from 53 to 63 mm. Same badge, same showroom, a ten-millimetre spread of caps. Anyone who tells you "the Volkswagen cap" as if there's one of them hasn't measured many Volkswagens.

The mainstream cap: 65 mm, part 3B7601171

The most common VW cap in the replacement market measures 65 mm OD with a 2.5 in clip ID, sold under OEM part number 3B7601171 for Jetta, Passat, Golf, CC and Tiguan wheels. If you're shopping for a mainstream VW of the last couple of decades, this is the family you'll meet first — and the part number molded into the back of your old cap is how you confirm you're actually in it.

The 60 mm Golf

Golf Mk7 and Mk8 wheels take a 60 mm OD cap — five millimetres under the mainstream 65. That's the trap inside the trap: a Golf is explicitly listed in the 3B7601171 family applications, and plenty of Golf wheels do take it, but the Mk7/Mk8 generation runs the smaller cap on its wheels. "Golf" is not a size. Generation and wheel are the size.

The electric end: ID.3 and ID.4

VW's EVs sit at the top of the range: ID.3 and ID.4 caps measure 66.5 mm OD with a 63 mm clip ID — the largest OD and the largest clip diameter in the published family spread. If you're coming from a gas VW, don't carry your old assumptions across; the ID cars are their own fitment.

How to shop this brand

Volkswagen rewards the part-number habit more than any other brand on this page. Read the molding on the back of your cap, match the number, then verify OD and clip ID with a caliper. Shopping by listing title alone — "VW center cap, fits Golf Jetta Passat" — is how 60 mm caps end up in 65 mm wheels and vice versa.

Sort yourself first: the Cap Finder carries the VW families side by side — run your model and generation through it, then do the 60-second confirmation from the How to Measure page.

Why one brand needs a whole range

The spread isn't sloppiness — it's arithmetic. Volkswagen sells the same nameplates across decades, continents and price points, and every wheel program carries its own cap. A brand that moves this many wheels accumulates families the way this one has: a mainstream 65, a generational 60, an electric 66.5, and a published total spread from 56 to 66.5 mm. The range is the Volkswagen spec. Any source that collapses it to a single number has deleted the information you actually need.
