Mercedes-Benz is one of the simpler stories in European fitment: the brand's OE center cap is a 74 mm cap. One size, published by the OE-cap references, covering the mainstream Mercedes wheel range. Simple — but "simple" has burned plenty of buyers who stopped reading there, so let's be precise about what that number is and what it isn't.

What 74 mm means

The 74 mm figure is the cap's outer diameter — the measurement across the face of the cap. It's the number you match when you shop. As with every cap on this site, the fitment itself is decided by the clip diameter on the back of the cap and the opening in your wheel, so treat 74 mm as the family identifier: it tells you which shelf to look on, and your caliper tells you whether a specific cap belongs on your wheel.

What 74 mm is not: the 66.6 mm bore

Mercedes C- and E-Class wheels center on a 66.6 mm hub bore (5×112). That is a wheel-to-hub spec, not a cap size, and it's more than 7 mm away from the cap. The two numbers get swapped in listings and forum posts constantly. If a seller is quoting 66.6 mm as a "center cap size" for a Mercedes, they're reading the wrong column of the fitment chart — walk away and measure your own cap instead.

Why you still measure

A single published OE size doesn't mean every Mercedes wheel ever cast takes it. Special editions, AMG wheels, older designs and aftermarket replacements all live outside the mainstream family, and Mercedes has been making wheels for a very long time. The brand-level number gets you to the right neighborhood in seconds; the measurement gets you to the right house. Pop the cap, caliper the face, caliper the clip tips, read the molded part number if there is one. Two minutes, zero returns.

Fastest path: run your Mercedes through the Cap Finder for the sourced fitment, then verify with the caliper method on the How to Measure page before money changes hands.

Materials and the salt question

Factory caps across the industry are mostly ABS plastic, with aluminum alloy, stainless and chrome-plated metal in the mix. If your Mercedes runs winter wheels in the salt belt — and in Canada, it does — favour quality ABS or coated metal. Cheap chrome plating and brittle no-name plastic are the first casualties of road salt, and a cap that survives the winter is cheaper than two caps that don't.
