Cleaning, Polishing and Storing Center Caps — the Care Routine
Center caps live in the dirtiest square foot of the vehicle — brake dust, road film and salt spray, baked on by hub heat. Care is simple, but the wrong product on the wrong material does permanent damage faster than the road does. Work by material.
Cleaning, by material
- ABS plastic (most OEM caps): car-wash soap, water and a soft brush. Brake dust lifts with patience, not pressure. Harsh solvents can haze the finish and embrittle clips — keep them away from the back of the cap especially.
- Chrome-plated caps: soap and water first; a dedicated chrome polish only where the plating is intact. Once plating pits or peels, polishing accelerates it — a peeling cap is a replacement candidate, not a polishing project (salt is usually the author; see the salt-belt guide).
- Aluminum / machined faces: mild soap, dry fully, and avoid acidic wheel cleaners pooling on the face.
- Painted caps: treat like body paint — wash, and wax if you wax the car.
The clip inspection (do it every cleaning)
Cleaning is inspection time: flex each clip gently and look for whitening or hairline cracks at the clip bases, check the spring ring for rust or lost tension, and confirm the part number is still legible — photograph it for your records while the cap is clean. A cap whose clips are going white at the base is telling you its remaining lifespan.
Storing seasonal sets
- Clean and fully dry before storage — stored salt keeps eating.
- Bag caps individually (a soft cloth or zip bag each) so faces don't rub.
- Label the bag with the vehicle and the part number; four anonymous caps in a bin are a springtime puzzle.
- Store flat, out of sunlight and away from solvent fumes.
