Buying Used OEM Center Caps — the Checks That Separate a Bargain From a Rattle

New OEM caps from a dealer are the expensive way to finish a wheel — published dealer pricing for something as ordinary as a GMC truck cap runs $35–$50 per cap, and premium brands go up from there. The used market exists precisely because caps outlive cars: wheels get scrapped, sets get split, and genuine caps with years of life left trade for a fraction of dealer money. The catch is that a used cap can also be a worn-out cap. These are the checks, in order.

Check one: the part number

Buy the number, not the listing title. Ask for — or read from the listing photos — the part number molded into the back of the cap, and match it against the documented families for your vehicle. A seller who photographs the back of the cap is showing you the part's identity and its condition in one frame. A seller who won't is asking you to guess, and guessing is your cost, not theirs. Our guide to reading cap part numbers covers the formats across brands.

Check two: the clips

Diameter is the cap's identity; clips are its remaining life. Inspect every clip in the photos: hairline cracks at the clip roots, tips worn round, clips bent outward from careless removal. One cracked clip on a snap-in cap is a countdown, not a defect you can average away. On spring-ring caps, check the ring is present and still round. On screw-on caps, count the screws.

Check three: both diameters

Favour listings that publish OD and clip ID, and confirm both against your own wheel's numbers before ordering — the families and figures are in the Cap Finder, and your measurements come from the How to Measure method. When a used cap arrives, measure it again before the return window closes. Sellers make mistakes; return windows expire; calipers don't care whose feelings are involved.

The honest alternatives

Used OEM isn't the only lane. Aftermarket brands like Dorman sell new reproductions of common caps at middling prices, and marketplace specialists stock deep used inventory. The trade is straightforward: dealer-new buys certainty at the top price, aftermarket buys newness at a mid price with fit that still needs verifying, and used OEM buys the genuine part at the lowest price in exchange for the inspection work above. For a daily driver in the salt belt, used OEM with healthy clips is very often the right answer.

Sets versus singles

One last buying decision: a matched set of four from the same donor car, or singles gathered one at a time? A true set shares age, finish and clip wear, so the wheels look uniform and the caps age together. Singles are cheaper per purchase and fine for replacing one lost cap, but finishes fade at different rates in different driveways, and a visibly brighter cap advertises itself. For a full replacement round, the matched set is usually worth the small premium; for one missing cap on a working truck, a verified single — number matched, clips sound, both diameters published — is the rational buy.
